CommanderWilliam Chawlyk

William is a member of the SAL in honor of his grandfather, William Chawlyk, a member of the US Navy during World War II.

A member since 2007, Will has atteneded the SAL college and is serving his first year as Commander of Squadron 19.

William also serves as American Legion Riders post 19, past Hudson county commander, Past Detachment Vice commander and Past squadron historian. He is also Chief of Bayonne fire canteen, Past Deputy Chief, Past Captain of Fundrasing, Free and Accepted Masons Peninsula #99,

Vice Commander Tony Clappsy

Tony is a member of the SAL in honor of his father, John Clappsy a member of the US Air Force who served during Vietnam.

A member since 2006, Tony is serving his first year as Vice Commander of Squadron 19 and currently maintains the website. Tony has headed several event committees and is also a member of the Color Guard

Tony also supports the Bayonne Fire Canteen.

"I'm proud of the veterans who fought; and are fighting for the freedoms many people take for granted, as a member of the SAL and American Legion I feel I am giving back in some small way."

Vice Commander James Newby Jr


James is a member of the SAL in honor of his father, James J Newby a member of the US Navy during Vietnam.

A member since 2009 James is serving his second year as Vice Commander of Squadron 19 and is the Captin of the Color Guard

"We as the Sons Of The American Legion not only participate in our community we also find ways to help out our community.Specially help out our fathers(the legionnaires) but also the other veterans that live in our community, as well as other Legion Family members and Veterans throughout this great state of New Jersey."

Historian John Gaunya


John is a member of the SAL, his father a Vietnam and Korean War vet serving in the United Stated Navy.

A member since 1994 John is a Life Member and Past Commander for Squadron 19. He has held the position of Sgt at Arms for both Post 19 and Hudson County, a past County Commander and a Chaplain for Post 19. Now he has assumed the reponsibility of the Squadron historian.

John has recently been awarded an honorary Life Membership in the Legion Riders in 2011.
