American Legion Eligibility

The American Legion is the nation's largest, most influential, effective and dependable advocate of veteran affairs. Since 1919, Legionnaires have fought for the rights of servicemen and women. Today we stand as 2.7 million members. If you have served honorably during any eligible war eras or are on active duty today, serving honorably, become a member of American Legion!



Eligibility Dates:

World War I April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918

World War II December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946

US Merchant Marines December 7, 1941 - August 15, 1945

Korea June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955

Vietnam February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975

Lebanon & Grenada August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984

Panama December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990

Presently August 2, 1990 - present


We're veterans just like you who care about America, veterans and their families and our nation's youth. The Legion is a powerful voice in Washington dedicated to preserving the rights we've all earned - and were promised - by our service to the nation we love. Just like you, we're "Still Serving America!".



American Legion Application

If you are interested in joining the American Legion Department of Illinois and have served at least one day of active military duty during the dates marked below and was honorably discharged or are still serving honorably, please fill out the form below. All fields must be completed, as noted. so we can process your application. Our present annual membership dues are $30. You will NOT be billed until your application is approved by the Department of Illinois membership staff.
